Races by the Numbers

Races by the Numbers

Wow...look at these numbers.

In 2016 there were 30,400 road races in the United States with a total of 16,957,100 people finishing these races.  The 5K was the most popular distance in the number of races, 17,000 and the number of finishers, 8.2 million. (source of this data is RunningUSA.com.)

Here are some more numbers from 2016.

  • 4,200 10K races
  • 2,800 Half-marathons
  • 1,200 8K (5-mile) races
  • 1,000 Marathons
  • 4,100 races of other distances

We are lucky to live in a town with an active running community that offers races in all these distances. You can find information about all the races in Huntsville on the Huntsville Track Club website.

I started to write that it would be tough to run in all these categories during a twelve month period, but I realized I did last year, except for one category.

It is not just about running the races but about the participating with friends in the running community.

A big thank you goes to the following for all their work in making Huntsville a great place to run.

In 2016, how many of the race categories above did you participate in?
